Pediatric eye care is critically important since children need to be able to see clearly in order to interact with daily life. As an adult, it is easy to take vision for granted. For children who start developing poor eyesight or suffer from an eye disease at an early age, they may never remember what it was like to see clearly because, for them, the world is simply blurry. Unfortunately, if a child is used to seeing the world through blurry vision, they will not know that anything is wrong and are unlikely to tell their parents or another adult. After all, why would a child comment on something that is perfectly normal to them? For this reason, many parents do not notice that their child has vision problems and it is left undiagnosed. We recommend keeping an eye out for several symptoms, additional changes or problems. These include:
- Squinting constantly
- Complaining of eye pain
- Inability to read street signs or signs in a store
- Moving up close to the television so that they can see
- Starting to misbehave in class
- Changing behaviors in school or obvious learning problems
These can all be signs of a child who is suffering from vision problems. Most parents would not associate vision problems with misbehaving in class, but they are entirely correlated. After all, if a child cannot see clearly, it is likely that they are going to be very frustrated, unable to engage appropriately with the teacher and may misbehave as a result.
Pediatric eye care
We recommend bringing a child to our clinic so that we can conduct an eye examination and vision test to determine if they are seeing clearly or need to have their eyes or vision treated.
We typically recommend that children begin by using glasses. However, once they reach middle school, switching to contact lenses may be appropriate and more convenient for them. This really depends on how responsible a child is. Contact lenses require a great amount of care where glasses are much easier to wear for children.
Comfortable glasses
Another reason to visit us for pediatric eye care is that we make it comfortable for patients to receive treatment. The glasses we prescribe can be incredibly comfortable and feature things like flexible frames that can bend in any direction. Other children may even want to wear sports glasses that can be easily kept on when running around and playing something active like basketball or soccer. We carry all varieties and make it possible for children to select a pair of frames that are going to both look fantastic and feel great no matter what they are doing.
